Wealth Through History

Who were the wealthiest people in the world at different points in history? Each checkpoint publishes a Top 8 with its estimate, share of contemporary economic output, valuation method, evidence tier and confidence. Where the evidence cannot support a ranking, we say so instead of inventing one.

Compare across time

Different eras, different methodologies

Figures from different centuries are not directly equivalent. A comparison shows the estimate, the share of contemporary economic output, the valuation method, the evidence tier and the confidence — never a single ranked number pretending the eras are the same.

Eras we have not published

Checkpoints before 1850 are held in evidence review. Pre-modern wealth cannot be expressed as a private net worth without distorting it: rulers controlled treasuries and territory rather than owning portfolios. Those periods will publish only with an explicit split between personal wealth, dynastic wealth and state or imperial resources, and only where archival or peer-reviewed economic history can support a ranking.
